TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents seized a vehicle filled with 75 bundles of marijuana late Monday evening. The vehicle displayed phony decals in an attempt to appear as if it was an official Santa Cruz County – Flood Control Department truck.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection tell KGUN 9 On Your Side, Sonoita Station agents discovered the abandoned 2005 pickup north of Harshaw. Hidden in the bed beneath a black sheet of plywood was over 1,750 pounds of marijuana.
The narcotics, worth an estimated $875,000, were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration and the truck was seized for evidence.
Agents were unable to locate any individuals in the area connected to the abandoned vehicle. It is suspected that smugglers abandoned the contraband to avoid apprehension and subsequent federal prosecution.
