TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A semi truck collided with a passenger vehicle traveling eastbound, sparking flames and causing multiple fatalities.
A semi-truck traveling westbound on I-10 near the Burnt Wells Rest Area crossed the median around 11:00 a.m. Sunday, striking an eastbound passenger car, according to officer Carrick Cook with the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
Both vehicles caught fire after they slid into a culvert on an eastbound shoulder.
Two fatalities have been confirmed, according to Cook.
Cook says two other passengers have been airlifted to a nearby hospital and that more fatalities could be confirmed later Sunday.
Eastbound lanes near milepost 87 are closed, but a six-mile detour is in place at milepost 81.
ADOT officials expect eastbound lanes to be closed until at least 6:00 p.m. Sunday.
