14 apply to fill vacancy on Arizona Supreme Court

PHOENIX (AP) - A state judicial nominating commission will review 14 lawyers' applications to fill a vacancy on the Arizona Supreme Court.
Andrew Hurwitz recently stepped down from the state high court to accept an appointment to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
The nominating commission will recommend at least three finalists to Gov. Jan Brewer, who will appoint Hurwitz's replacement.
The 14 applicants include a half-dozen current Court of Appeals judges, including Ann Scott Timmer. She's a former presiding judge of the mid-level court's Phoenix division and a past finalist for a Supreme Court opening.
Other applicants include lawyers in private practice, Maricopa County Superior Court judges and senior officials in the Attorney General's Office.
Those officials are Solicitor General David Cole and Kent Cattani, the state's top death penalty attorney.
