Brewer appeal in partners case prompts resignation

PHOENIX (AP) - An appointee of Gov. Jan Brewer is resigning to protest her opposition to providing state workers' domestic partner benefits.
The state recently asked the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn lower courts' rulings that the state cannot take away same-sex domestic partner benefits.
The Arizona Republic (http://bit.ly/RYQ05f ) reports that Edwin Leslie is resigning from the Arizona Tourism Advisory Council.
Leslie says same-sex couples deserve the same rights and liberties as other Americans and that Brewer's position hurts the tourism industry.
A budget law signed by Brewer revoked domestic partner benefits granted couples under her predecessor.
A federal judge ruled Arizona could revoke benefits to opposite-sex couples because they can legally marry, but he overturned the revocation for same-sex couples.
Brewer says states should have the right to decide their funding priorities.
