TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A former wrestling coach and current security guard at Tucson High School was arrested after deputies with the Pima County Sheriff's Department found him inside a parked van with a 15-year-old girl, according to Deputy Tom Peine with PCSD. He appeared before a judge Sunday night for the first time and was granted a $10,000 bond. His attorney told the court that he would comply with the court's orders for a variety of reasons, including that he's an upstanding citizen and a family man.
Richard Ortiz, 53, was parked in the 6600 block of S. Gila Ave., Saturday night when deputies found him.
They had received reports of a suspicious vehicle in the area and when they looked inside, they found Ortiz with a teenage girl, both partially dressed.
They were taken for questioning, and detectives learned that Ortiz worked as a wrestling coach at Tucson High School until January of this year.
He then took on a role of liasion, and still worked with students as a campus monitor.
TUSD spokeswoman Cara Rene tells KGUN9 that Ortiz does not work during the summer, but is employed with the district.
The girl found in the van with Ortiz was a member of the wrestling team and received private wrestling instruction from Ortiz.
On Saturday, the girl was helping Ortiz set up an event. Ortiz was supposed to take her back home, but took her to the south end of Gila Avenue where he engaged in sexual activity with her.
Ortiz was arrested for sexual conduct with a minor and booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Center. Deputies are still investigating the incident.
Rene says TUSD will work with police and the sheriff's department to get them any information they need.
