TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Tucson Fire responded to a structure fire at an old storage unit around 8:30 Wednesday morning.
According to Pat Quinn, the storage unit was behind a vacant and boarded up motel near the 2600 block of East Benson Highway.
Employees at the Pima County Sheriff Office Building saw the fire from up the street and called it in to TFD.
Crews used a fire hydrant on the opposite side of Benson Highway, shutting down that section of the road while they battled the blaze.
It took nine minutes for firefighters to get the flames under control, but were swarmed by bees once the smoke began to dispel. They used foam to extinguish hot spots and keep the bees from attacking.
No injuries or bee stings were reported.
Investigators say the fire was caused when property owners tried to smoke out the bees by setting cow manure on fire. High winds blew through the building and glowing embers helped start the fire.
The damage is estimated at $5,000.
