Arizona Legislature drops curtain on busy session

PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona lawmakers took on meaty and fiercely debated legislation aplenty during the 2012 session, including hot-button topics such as tax cuts and reproductive rights.
They also took months to finish the must-do job of approving a new state budget that ended up a predictable compromise between Republican Gov. Jan Brewer and majority Republicans. It has some additional spending but also partial replenishment of the state's rainy day fund.
Overall, the 116-day session that ended Thursday night generally was shaped by a conservative-driven agenda.
That's no surprise since Republicans hold two-thirds majorities of both chambers. Democrats repeatedly lambasted Republicans as tea party followers.
Measures approved by lawmakers include those that restrict abortions, promote states' rights and redesign the state government's personnel system to make it more like those of private businesses.
