TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Northwest Fire Capt. Adam Goldberg reports a woman has been critically injured. The car she was driving was discovered to have rolled over into an irrigation canal.
Authorities say the driver was airlifted to the University of Arizona Central Campus trauma center.
Emergency crews used the jaws of life to gain access to the woman, who is in her 60's, according to Capt. Goldberg.
Authorities say she sustained critical, life-threatening injuries as a result of the crash.
Investigators report the car struck a concrete bridge crossing and landed in the irrigation canal on the east side of I-10, just south of Cortaro.
The occupant was traveling westbound on the frontage road when she drifted off the roadway and crashed, according to Capt. Goldberg.
Officials with the emergency crews believe the patient may have suffered a medical emergency prior to the accident.
The roadway remains closed while the Marana Police Department is investigating the scene of the accident.
