ROSCOE, Ill. (AP) - Police from Illinois and Arizona have arrested a 41-year-old man for a Phoenix homicide more than 24 years ago.
The Beloit Daily News reports Phoenix police and Winnebago County Sheriff's officers arrested Steven Michael Humelhans on Monday in the northern Illinois city of Roscoe, near the Wisconsin border. Humelhans was arrested on a first-degree murder warrant out of Maricopa County in Arizona for the 1988 death of 25-year-old Eric Rice.
Phoenix police say Humelhans was first charged in Rice's death in 1996 but the case was dropped due to lack of evidence. Police say a witness provided new evidence that was presented to a grand jury in March and Humelhans was indicted.
Humelhans is held at the Winnebago County jail in Rockford awaiting extradition to Arizona.
