McALLEN, Texas (AP) - A 15-year-old boy has been taken into custody and accused of being the driver of a van that crashed in South Texas, killing nine suspected illegal immigrants.
Palmview Police Chief Chris Barrera tells The Monitor of McAllen that the boy was taken into custody at his home in Hidalgo County Thursday night. Barrera said more details would be released at a Monday news conference.
Investigators had said the driver had fled the scene of the fatal Tuesday night wreck on a U.S. 83 frontage road in Palmview, nine miles west of McAllen and 60 miles northwest of Brownsville. They said the van rolled and crashed after speeding away from a traffic stop in the border city. Six other occupants were injured.
