Montgomery criticizes feds over Arpaio probe

PHOENIX (AP) - Maricopa County's top prosecutor criticized the U.S. Justice Department for not giving him additional information on its civil rights allegations against Sheriff Joe Arpaio. County Attorney Bill Montgomery says Wednesday that the refusal to share information on allegations that Arpaio's office racially profiled Latinos, failed to adequately investigate a large number of sex-crimes cases and committed other violations calls into question the Justice Department's claims. Montgomery's criticism echoes a complaint by Arpaio. The Justice Department has responded to Arpaio's complaint by saying a 22-page letter that it sent to Arpaio's and Montgomery's offices in December provides those details. Settlement talks scheduled for Wednesday between federal officials and Arpaio's lawyers were called off. The Justice Department didn't have an immediate comment Tuesday.
