Brewer draws line on budget with Tucson bill veto

PHOENIX (AP) - Gov. Jan Brewer used a veto of a Tucson development district bill to send a lengthy message to legislators about her budget priorities.
Brewer's letter explaining the veto Monday of the Rio Nuevo Multipurpose Facilities District says it is unwise to approve legislation with spending or tax changes before there's agreement on a new state budget.
Her letter then expounds at length on budget matters as she cites a desire to protect funding for schools, public safety and services for the vulnerable.
The Republican governor and Republican legislative leaders have offered differing approaches on the budget.
Lawmakers want to tuck away some money while using other dollars to off debt incurred during the Great Recession. Brewer has a list of spending increases on the table.
