State-level National Geographic Bee announces Arizona winner

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - The Arizona state-level 2012 National Geographic Bee is proud to congratulate winner Raghav Ranga.
Ranga, eighth grader from St. Gregory College Prep School, says he's excited to have made to the finalists circle as he will move on to the national level Geographic Bee in Washington D.C. Ranga has a shot to be crowned the National Geographic Bee champion.
The Tucson Convention Center housed the state-level bee today, beginning with 100 student finalists ranging in schools and ages from fifth to eighth grade. Students were tested orally on their geography skills after winning school competitions.
Ranga advances representing Arizona against 53 other students from around the country.
The national first place prize is a $25,000 college scholarship and a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society. Second wins $15,000 and third wins a $10,000 college scholarship.
The 24th annual National Geographic Bee championship round, moderated by "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek, will be held Thursday May 24 in Washington D.C. It will air on the National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo WILD will air the final bee round at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
