PHOENIX (AP) - Police have arrested a Phoenix couple on child abuse charges related to burns found on their 8-year-old daughter.
Twenty-seven-year-old Alberto Melendez-Baez and 23-year-old Susana Espiru each were booked on four child abuse charges and one count each of kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment.
They do not yet have lawyers.
Police said Sunday that the girl told her grandmother that her parents held her down and burned her with a hot spoon on her hand and on her hip on separate occasions.
The burn on her hand resulted in an infection and two hospital visits.
Police say that the girl's parents also locked her in a backyard shed overnight after burning her hand.
The girl and her younger brother are now with family members.
