TUCSON(KGUN9-TV) - Tucson Police responded to a report of a collision involving a pedestrian in the area of North Alvernon Way and East Third Street after a call to 911 was placed. Authorities say they received the first call at approximately 12:07 p.m. on Tuesday.
Officers responded to the area and discovered that an elderly woman had been struck by a vehicle in an area just south of the intersection of North Alvernon Way and East Third Street. The woman was suffering from life threatening injuries, according to police.
Emergency medical personnel from the Tucson Fire Department responded to the scene as well. Authorities took the woman to a local hospital for emergency medical treatment.
Authorities describe the female as an 81-year-old Caucasian woman. She succumbed to her injuries while at the hospital and was pronounced dead, according to police. Next of kin have not yet been notified.
Detectives examined and collected roadway evidence as well as conducted interviews with the driver of the vehicle and witnesses to the incident. Authorities say the elderly female was walking northbound in a sidewalk area along the west side of North Alvernon Way.
The driver of the vehicle, a silver 2006 Toyota Camry, was exiting a private drive on the west side
of North Alvernon Way, preparing to make a right turn to drive southbound on North Alvernon Way.
Authorities say the driver of the Toyota Camry struck the 81-year-old pedestrian as she began to cross in front of the vehicle. The driver remained at the scene and fully cooperated with the investigation.
Tucson police cited the driver for the civil traffic violation of failure to yield from a private drive. There is no indication that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the collision.
