TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Rito Perez, 55, has been identified as the man killed in a pedestrian accident on Wednesday morning.
Sgt. Maria Hawke with Tucson Police tells KGUN9 that police responded to a collision involving a large passenger van and a pedestrian, near Alvernon Way and Broadway Boulevard around 8:30 a.m.
When officers arrived on the scene, they found Perez suffering from life threatening injuries. He was immediately transported to a local hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries while at the hospital and was pronounced deceased.
Detectives determines Perez had initially been riding a Sun Tran bus traveling northbound on Alvernon Way. The bus came to a stop in the roadway just south of the intersection and Perez got off the bus after telling the driver he needed to catch a different bus. Perez exited the bus from the rear doors, stepping out into the northbound, right turn lane of North Alvernon Way.
A large passenger van, identified as a 2007 El Dorado Arrowlite Bus, was traveling northbound in the right turn lane. It struck Perez as he was stepping out into the lane, directly in the path of the passenger van.
No citations were issued in this case.
