TUSCON (KGUN9- TV) - A 13-year-old boy is dead after a fatal collision near the intersection of 22nd and Randolph.  It happened Thursday at around 1:30pm, when a group of young teens were running across the street.

The group was running in the crosswalk and stopped in the median, but the 13-year-old didn't stop.  He was hit by an oncoming SUV.

Christopher Massingill heard the crash from his front yard.  A former EMT with the Mt. Lemmon Fire Department, he rushed to help along with three other medical professionals in the area.  They performed CPR and chest compression until the ambulance arrived.

"I kept telling him to be strong and fight," said Massingill, "I just hoped that we could get air into him."

Police say the collision was unavoidable.  The 32-year-old driver does not face any charges or citations and police say alcohol and drugs were not factors.

Massingill says he hears near-accidents on a weekly basis at that intersection.  He and another neighbor told 9 On Your Side they plan to circulate a petition to get a light installed.  Massingill is a father of three, and says he has been concerned for a while.

"I'm very shaken up, I just hope to God they put a light here, anything," he said, "I hear the screaming of the tires and I worry every time."

According to Sgt. Maria Hawke with Tucson Police, the intersection does not have more accidents than other intersections in the area with heavy pedestrian traffic.
