TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) – With a looming deadline to extend the payroll tax cut, The White House is asking Americans, what does $40 mean to you?

For an average American family, the expiration of the payroll tax cut means they will be shelling out $1 thousand in extra taxes per year.

“It would mean our electric bill,” said Monique Cole of Tucson.

Cole says her family is already on a tight budget and losing an extra $40 would be devastating.

“I'm at the library renting movies and checking out books versus buying them. $40 would definitely impact our family,” said Cole.

Carolina Valenzuela of Tucson said she needs the $40 to pay for gas.

Senator John McCain, said the House of Representatives needs to move quickly to pass the extension.

“People have stopped me in the street to tell me $40 means a lot to them,” he said. “That's why we have to act.”
