MT. LEMMON (KGUN9-TV) – Summerhaven and Ski Valley are expecting their largest crowd of the season this weekend, which could force the mountain to close.

The Mt. Lemmon Fire Department and the Pima County Sheriff’s Office, partner to keep Mt. Lemmon safe, which includes crowd control.

"If the mountain gets too crowded, then Pima County Sheriff's department will close the mountain," said Mt. Lemmon Fire Chief Randy Ogden.

If the mountain closes, Odgen says a car will be allowed up when a car comes down. He said he supports implementing a transportation system, to allow more people on the mountain at once.

"I think a shuttle would be a great idea, or a bus line," he said.

Ogden says there are about 300 parking spaces. If there’s too many cars parked alongside the road and emergency vehicles can’t get through, officials will close the mountain.

To find out if Catalina Highway is closed up to Mt. Lemmon call the Road Closure Line at 547- 7510.
