Little Phoenix girl dies after beating

PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix police say a 3-year-old girl has died of severe injuries allegedly inflicted by her stepfather.
Dani Mayo was taken to Maricopa Medical Center on Thursday after the Phoenix Fire Department responded to a call of a child not breathing at an apartment in south Phoenix. Police Sgt. Tommy Thompson announced her death on Sunday, and said child abuse charges against the stepfather would be upgraded to murder charges.
A police probable cause statement filed in court says the 22-year-old stepfather admitted to an officer that he repeatedly punched the child and beat her with a belt because she refused to eat a hot dog.
