TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Longtime TUSD board member, Judy Burns, has died from a heart attack.  Burns served on the board for 11 years.

TUSD Superintendent John Pedicone was the first with the district to learn about her death.

“I got a phone call from Judy's husband,” said Pedicone.

Pedicone was at an annual luncheon, with the other four TUSD board members, when he got the call.  It was a luncheon that Burns typically attends, but she wasn’t expected at this one.  She was supposed to be going back home to Michigan, according to Pedicone, to take care of family matters.

Pedicone says moving forward without Burns will be difficult.

“I can't imagine the board operating without Judy.  It’s really a strange feeling,” he said.

Burns, 63, was elected to the board in 2000.  Her term would have been up in December 2012.

The Pima County school superintendent will either hold a special election, to fill the board’s vacant seat, or appoint someone for the remaining year of Burns’ term.  There is also an option to keep the seat empty until next December, but with all the issues facing the school district, Pedicone says that option is unlikely.
