TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) – U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords left for Asheville, N.C. Sunday for two weeks of intensive therapy sessions.
According to a statement from Giffords' office, Giffords will spend time with a therapist who has worked with her in Houston for the last several months. This therapist has been extensively involved in the congresswoman’s therapy.
Giffords will work with the therapist from Monday Oct. 24 through Nov. 4 in Asheville, according to her spokesman. The trip is strictly rehabilitation-related and has been planned for the last several months.
The congresswoman has no scheduled public appearances or events and will give no interviews, according to the statement from her spokesman.
Giffords continues to undergo rehabilitation as part of her recovery from a brain injury suffered when she was shot on Jan. 8 in Tucson.
Six people were killed and 13 others, including Giffords, were wounded when a gunman opened fire at Giffords’ Congress On Your Corner event in Northwest Tucson.
The man charged in the shooting, Jared Loughner, is in mental health treatment and will be re-evaluated early next year to determine his competency to stand trial.
