TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Police have arrested and charged the second suspect for a fatal accident on Tucson's north side, which authorities say was caused by street racing activity.

Authorities located and arrested 22-year-old Matthew Wayne Leiter, of Tucson. During the initial investigation, detectives determined that Damaso Alavez, 21,  was involved in an illegal street race with another driver when Alavez caused a fatal collision.

According to authorities, the second vehicle in the race, a dark colored late-model Chevrolet Camaro, returned to the scene momentarily, and then fled from the area before first responders arrived.

Since the collision, detectives have worked diligently to identify and locate the driver of the second vehicle. Friday night, detectives successfully located Leiter, who was booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Center on one count of leaving the scene of a serious injury or fatal collision, a class three felony. Leiter’s booking photo will be added when it becomes available.

Police arrested Alavez, 21, at approximately 2:35 a.m. Saturday, when authorities responded to the intersection of North Oracle Road and West River Road for the reported collision with serious injuries.

Alavez was booked into Pima County Jail and charged with one count of Second-Degree Murder, one count of Endangerment, and one count of Criminal Damage.
