Tucson man dies from injuries sustained in car crash

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A Tucson man has died after being fatally injured in a car accident early Saturday morning.

Tucson Police report the accident occurred at 2:35 a.m., at the intersection of North Oracle Road and West River Road.

Three adult males were transported to a local trauma center. Just after 11 a.m. Saturday, 29-year-old Stephen Larson of Tucson succumbed to his injuries. Next of kin have been notified.

Detectives from the Traffic Investigations Unit responded to the motor vehicle accident scene, to investigate the cause of the high-speed collision. Detectives examined roadway evidence and obtained witness statements.

Authorities determined the victim was driving a 2006 Kia Sorento and state the victim had turned into the north-bound middle lane of North Oracle Road, after making a left turn from east-bound River Road.

Tucson Police report the suspect vehicle, a 2002 Volkswagen Passat, was involved in an illegal street race with another vehicle, and was traveling north-bound in the middle lane at an extremely high rate of speed.

The suspect vehicle slammed into the rear of the victim's vehicle just north of the intersection. A passenger in the suspect vehicle, a 22-year-old male, suffered non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the other suspect vehicle, identified as 21-year-old Demaso Alvarez, of Tucson, also suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Both parties were transported to a local trauma center for evaluation and treatment.

Upon his release from the hospital, Alvarez will be booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Center, facing one count of Second Degree Murder, one count of Endangerment, and one count of Criminal Damage, all felonies. Alcohol and a high rate of vehicular speed were both factors in the collision.
