TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - The Pima County Sheriff's Department announced that they are receiving a new helicopter in March of 2012 to replace one lost during a crash in late January of 2011.
The new helicopter is manufactured by Eurocopter, a popular brand among law enforcement and medical helicopter operators in Arizona.
Pima County is purchasing the helicopter using seized RICO money from crimes and an insurance grant received.
Officials say the new helicopter will expand the mission to include search and rescue capabilities. Equipment on-board the helicopter will include spotlights, an infrared tracking system (FLIR), and a hoist for rescue operations.
The purchase is part of Sheriff Dupniks' commitment to continue the helicopter program with the department.
