TUCSON (KGUN9- TV) - This weekend, millions of Americans will remember a dark day in U.S history, but some will celebrate the lives of those children born on September 11, during disaster. Nowhere will that celebration be more poignant than in Tucson.
Christina-Taylor Green, born on September 11 was killed just nine years later in another national tragedy, the Tucson shooting. This year as her family mourns the loss of their daughter on her 10th birthday, they won't be alone.
Green made the most of her short nine years. Just four days after her death, president Obama acknowledged her curiosity for politics and enthusiasm for leadership.
Whether in her Girl Scout troop or little league baseball team, Green inspired others with commitment and a spirit of giving. That spirit sparked several initiatives to give back to others, like the Christina -Taylor Green Memorial Fund, and a scholarship program started by ABC's Diane Sawyer to help others accomplish what she didn't have the chance to do.
In addition to baseball field and park dedications in her name, Green also inspired works of art. A Pennsylvania artist gave an angel sculpture to the Oro Valley park where Green used to play. She incorporated wreckage from the World Trade Center.
On Green's tenth birthday, her family will receive another work of art from Donna Provost in Maine.
Provost spent 175 days making a cross-stitch portrait of Green, after hearing about the tragedy on the news.
"when I saw her father on television and he said we used to be a family of four and now we're a family of three," she explained, "I knew what I had to do."
Up until this point, Provost had only made the elaborate pictures to hang in her own home of her own children and grandchildren. This will be the first to be given to someone else.
"I felt it was my responsibility to try to do something and bring her back and give her back to them," said Provost, "So they could be a family of four."
