WILLIAMS, Ariz.(KGUN9-TV/AP) - A lightning-caused wildfire burning near the northern Arizona community of Williams is now at more than 3,700 acres. The U.S. Forest Service said Saturday that smoke is visible from Flagstaff and along portions of I-40 due to operations on and around Government Mountain from the 3,781-acre Beale Fire.
The U.S. Forest Service says the fire is being allowed to burn in an 8,000-acre area in order to restore forest health and lessen the danger of wildfire. Operations on and around Government Mountain is causing smoke to drift into Flagstaff and along portions of Interstate 40 and Highway 180.
Spring Valley, Peaceful Valley, Pumpkin Center and Parks are experiencing heavier smoke impacts. Similar smoke production is expected the next few days, according to officials.
A total of 60 people are working the fire along with five engines, one water tender, one dozer and a helicopter. For more information, visit www. inciweb.org/incident/2417.
