Gov. Brewer faces deadline for immigration appeal

PHOENIX (AP) - Governor Brewer has an Aug. 10 deadline to ask the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn a ruling that put the most controversial parts of SB1070, Arizona's immigration enforcement law, on hold.
Matthew Benson, spokesperson for Brewer, says lawyers representing the governor intend to file the appeal by the deadline.
Brewer lost an appeal earlier this year when the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco refused to reverse a ruling that prevented key parts of the law from being enforced.
The Associated Press reports that U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton blocked requirements that immigrants obtain or carry immigration registration papers. In addition, she also blocked a provision that police, while enforcing other laws, question a person's immigration status if officers have reasonable suspicion the person was in the country illegally.
