Tucson's largest residential annexation takes effect to Ward 5 on the Southside and that means changes for residents in that area.

The area includes more than 600 acres and is located southeast of Swan and Valencia and north of the "Los Reales Landfill," as well as north and south of Craycroft and Interstate 10.

The most important change for homeowners, is trash pick-up. Beginning Friday, trash will be picked up by City of Tucson. According to city officials, homeowners can expect to pay less for property tax than they did for private expenses such as trash services.

The area will now be patrolled by the Tucson Police Department not Pima County Sheriff's Department. It will be under the jurisdiction of TPD's south and east divisions.
Residents will also be serviced by the Tucson Fire Department. However, water service stays the same, they will continue to get it from Tucson Water.

Meanwhile, businesses will have to submit new paper work and pay a city sales tax, but city officials say the money will be invested directly in that area. The revenue from the annexation will be invested on road repairs in the area including a pedestrian walking path and additional Tucson police officers.

According to city officials, the main reason the mayor and city council decided to expand the city's boundaries is the revenue the annexation will bring to the city. Officials estimate that, after costs, there will be a net revenue of more than $9 million in only 10 years .
