Tucson Police have confirmed that 33-year-old Osee Calix died after an officer-involved shooting near midtown, according to Sgt. Kimberly Bay.
The shooting happened near Columbus Boulevard and Fairmount Street.
Around 11:15 a.m. an officer was conducting a traffic stop on the 33-year-old bicyclist. Calix. Calix has been riding his bike on the sidewalk along Columbus and that is a violation of Arizona traffic laws.
Prior to the initial stop Calix hit a raised portion of the sidewalk and fell off his bike. The officer checked his welfare and began his investigation.
An additional officer responded to the scene to provide assistance. Calix provided several names and the officers could not verify his identity.
Tucson Fire Department was called to treat Calix's injuries. When the paramedics were done with their treatment, police went to detain Calix for providing a false name and information.
That's when Calix pulled out a gun, according to multiple witnesses. Both officers were struggling to get the gun when Calix discharged his weapon. That bullet did not hit anyone.
Calix refused to give up his gun and was shot by an officer. He was taken into custody and transported to the hospital where he later died.
Detectives were able to determine that Calix had an extraditable felony probation violation warrant for narcotics related offenses out of Florida.
The officer who discharged his duty weapon during the incident has been identified as Officer Ian Brown, a one year veteran of the Tucson Police Department.
