TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Outrage over the Charlottesville incidents and the President's response has people planning a large anti-Trump rally near where he will be in Phoenix on Tuesday.
Activists in Tucson will have their own rally for people who can't go.
As demonstrators gather in Phoenix to protest the visit of President Trump there on Tuesday there will also be demonstrations in Tucson. Some people simply can't make it to Phoenix easily others want to put a Tucson signature on their opinions and they will be gathering near the Pima County Administration complex.”
Just one day after disturbances and death in Charlottesville, Tucson protestors organized a large march against racism.
Congressional candidate Billy Kovacs helped organize it.
He thinks the country needs quiet reflection right now, not a President holding a campaign-style rally in the Phoenix Convention Center. So he's hoping for an even stronger statement of the spirit of last weekend's march.
"We're trying to represent a message of peace. We saw on Sunday thousands of people came together because this is what the community is in Tucson: Muslims, Jewish faith leaders, Christian leaders, non-denominational leaders, we all came together in the response we wanted to see and show the people this is not our community."
Police escorted the Sunday's marchers and everything stayed peaceful. TPD Chief Christopher Magnus hopes that will be the model for this new demonstration ---free expression, expressed peacefully.
"This is a city that demonstrates tolerance, responsibility, caring and kindness and I think our, I hope people who show up for this rally will be peaceful, will be thoughtful about how they treat other people but will also understand that we will have no tolerance for violence.">
Organizer Kovacs sees the way protestors made their point peacefully in Sunday's march as an expression of Tucson's soul and he's confident we'll see that again Tuesday.
