TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - The perfect Thanksgiving meal can mean a lot of pressure for whoever's doing the cooking. There can be so many ingredients it's easy to forget something.

That's when someone else in the family gets a no-fail -- high stakes mission: “Go get the butter, or milk, or eggs or.....!”

It’s Mid-morning, Thanksgiving Day, at the Bashas on Swan near Camp Lowell, and there's a hint of desperation in the air. The store has a lot of people in it who have been told basically bring back the butter or don't come back at all.

Shoppers like Andrew Thomas are on an urgent mission---assigned by someone they had better not disappoint.

"We have a pumpkin pie for my mom. We have cranberry juice.  We have asparagus and we have various sausages to put in the stuffing.  That's about it."

It's been a long time since we needed any real hunting skill to fill out a feast but modern shoppers are hunting down foods the pilgrims would think of as witchcraft---like fluffy sweet cream shot out of a can.

Jack Smith finally found his quarry: several cans of whipped cream.

"I went to a couple of stores this morning.  They don't have any. Now I'm starting to panic.  I'm driving around like a crazy man, burning gas and voila!”

Of course, stuffing yourself usually involves stuffing the turkey.

And there's the cranberry sauce and the almost religious debate over whole berry or jelly that still shows the lines from the can.

As the formerly desperate shoppers check out, they can have the satisfaction of knowing they may not have cooked the meal but their modest missions made the menu complete.
