Many designers are getting the chance to feature impeccable jewelry at the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show this weekend. But, one local high school is letting students try their hands at designing, as well.

Salpointe Catholic High School's Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics program, also known as STEM, is teaming up with Tucson-based Krikawa Jewelry.

On Thursday, participants in the program through Salpointe visited the gallery downtown to see the tedious creative process first-hand.

The students, along with the help of Krikawa, will be designing two bracelets to auction-off at a fundraising event in April.

Career and Technical Education Department Chair Jason Hastings told KGUN9, the students are very enthusiastic about getting the chance to create something special.

"I'm a little jealous to be honest with you," Hastings laughed. "I would've liked to have had this experience in high school... this is something you'd usually see in a trade school or an engineering program at a college, not in a high school, so this is a really unique opportunity for them."

The two bracelets are estimated to be worth $2,500 a piece and will be auctioned off at the 29th Annual Jeans & Jewels Gala to raise money for Salpointe. The event will take place on April 23.
