Dozens of people gathered downtown to rally against Tucson Electric Power's proposed rate hike for solar customers.

Officials with TEP met with the Arizona Corporation Commission for a public hearing on the proposal this afternoon.

"If approved, revised rates will provide fair, affordable pricing for all TEP customers," said Joseph Barrios from TEP.

"It also will allow us to direct additional renewable energy investments to larger, more cost-effective systems that benefit our community."

TEP said the rate increase would only affect new customers.

But the Solar Supporters said "TEP is proposing an additional $25 to $30 in monthly charges for new solar customers, in addition to a significant reduction in the amount paid to rooftop solar customers for any electricity they send back to the grid."

The Arizona Corporation Commission will make a decision later this year.
