The Pima County Sheriff's Department is warning about a spike in car burglaries in Corona de Tucson and Vail.

There have been more than 800 so far this year, which is higher than this time last year. Most of the increase happened just this month, including 11 in neighborhoods in Vail and Corona de Tucson.

According to Deputy Cody Gress with the Pima County Sheriff's Department, most of the increase happened this month and coincides with many people going back to school. In most cases, people are leaving their cars unlocked and thieves are simply doing door- handle checks and taking advantage of these opportunities, he said.

The spike in car break-ins this month has prompted the Pima County Sheriff's Department to try and find a solution. "We have our directed patrol units and our regular patrol units setting up more concentrated patrols in those areas," Deputy Gress said.

The directed patrols will be working overnight hours in neighborhoods in Vail and in Corona De Tucson. However, the department is also looking into the possibility of having extra patrols in other districts within Pima County.

PCSD is reminding everyone that thieves are looking for quick and easy crimes so it's important to keep car doors locked at all times.
