Local veteran gets free car

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A local veteran got a special surprise ahead of Veterans Day.

Gerardo Ruiz spent 10 years in the military, but he has had trouble transitioning to a normal life.

His family struggles with everybody's schedule because they only have one car.

Often, he, his wife, and their three kids have to wake up at 3 a.m. to get everyone to work, school, and day care.

Ruiz said it has been difficult for the kids and their moods have changed because of it.

Progressive Insurance partnered up with Chapman Collision Center to give them a refurbished 2014 Nissan Altima as part of its Veterans Day Celebration.

He is one of 100 veterans who will receive a vehicle nationwide.

Ruiz said he is going to take his family to Knott's Berry Farm to celebrate.
