TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) -  Arizonans have elected John McCain to the US Senate five times.

Now Republican challenger Doctor Kelli Ward is working to defeat him in the August 30th primary, and go up against Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick in the November election.

With candidates like Donald Trump, and Bernie Sanders making their marks this election year, Doctor Kelli Ward thinks this is the year for outsiders like her to beat John McCain who she sees as a 30 year insider.

Ward says, “People are expressing their anger and their disgust and their disappointment and their frustration with what's happening inside the Beltway and Washington DC and here in Arizona, John McCain is the biggest poster boy for term limits that exists in the country."

McCain says, There's a lot of turbulence out there to say the least and so anybody who is running for office, much less reelection can't take anything for granted."

But if Ward sees McCain's long history as a reason to vote against him, he sees it as a top reason to vote for him.

McCain: “First of all, on my record.  Second of all, national security.  The United States is under greater attack than it's been in 70 years.  We've had attacks in San Bernadino, in Orlando, and our Director of National Intelligence has said there will be more attacks."

Ward: "We see a pile of bodies from Benghazi to Orlando and that's because of the policies of John McCain and Hillary Clinton."

Now it's up to Republican voters to decide if they want a new voice, or the voice of experience to  run against Ann Kirkpatrick in November.
