Defensible space around homes can reduce wildfire risk

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Wildfires can happen any time of year in Arizona and crews are taking action now to protect homes.

Twelve inmate fire crews across Arizona clear brush and create a "defensible" space around homes.

The Department of Forestry says homeowners can help with the efforts.

Neighborhoods can take part in the Firewise Communities Program which teaches people how to mitigate wildfire risks.

Several southern Arizona communities including Summerhaven on Mount Lemmon and Cochise Stronghold Canyon are part of the program.
