An Arizona congresswoman is working to better understand law enforcement in Southern Arizona. Martha McSally suited up for a ride-along with Tucson Police Monday night.

This comes after weeks of controversy surrounding police officers and the communities they serve. Nine On Your Side spoke with the representative about what she thinks needs to change.

"How law enforcement, as they're coming up to a situation, what are their choices, what are their options," said McSally. "They're making split second decisions, not necessarily knowing what's in front of them and what kind of danger there is. So they're obviously has to be good rules of engagement, I know this from being in the military. There has to be training of all the individuals to make sure they understand what their options are and what the rules of engagement are. There has to be accountability obviously for those who are going too far regarding the use of force. It's always easy to look backwards and second guess what someone might have done with the clarity after the fact. But, in the midst of it, we're talking about split second decisions. Where there is legislation that could address some of these issues I certainly want to understand what we could actually address from the people that are out there every single day."

The representative added she'll be talking with local law enforcement about potential changes in their departments.
