TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Nearly 10,000 cyclists participated in El Tour de Tucson today. The day's biggest event started at 7:00 this morning outside Armory Park.

Four different tours took riders all across the city as they rode alongside miles of mountainside and Sonoran Desert.

The longest ride of the day was a 104 mile tour. For the first time in the event's history, nearly 60 riders completed a century tour in under four hours.

"We tried to go as hard as we could there at the finish," said third place tandem rider Chris Demarchi. "We crossed the line right around 36, 37 miles per hour and they barely got around us. So for not really pulling they only got us by a couple bike links."

First place for women riders was  U of A student Erica Clevenger.

"My first time was the year that it poured, and it was awful." she said. "Then the second time I did it was last year and I dropped my chain and I ended up with second place so finally things sort of came together this year. The cycling community here rocks I'm so happy that I found it."

In first place overall, Juan Magallanes, 33, crossed the finish line in 3:54:59.72, while Ramon Juarez, 31, crossed at almost the same time in 3:54:59.90.

Finishing in third and fourth place was a tandem bike team. The two bikers named Chris DeMarchi, 44 and Phil Tintsman, 41. They crossed the finish line in 3:55:00.56 and 3:55:00.63.

The tandem led for much of the race but fell behind in the final seconds.

Some of the riders behind the top four include David Salomon, Hector Rangel and David Richter. The first woman finisher crossed the finish line in 14th place, her name is Jennifer Sharp.
