Throughout history, cultures around the world continue to seek explanations surrounding solar eclipses. Since, August 21 marks the start of an eclipse viewing in the United States, myths and superstitions are quickly circulating the web. Here are nine modern myths about this thrilling phenomenon:
If you cook food during a solar eclipse
Some people believe that radiation is produced during an eclipse, causing food cooked during the event to become poisoned. According to Live Science, if this were the case, the food in your pantry and crops in your yard would also be harmed.
If you plant flowers during a solar eclipse
While most superstitions are full of doom and gloom, some gardeners believe otherwise. It's considered a smart idea to plant flowers during the solar eclipse to ensure brighter and more beautiful blooms.
A solar eclipse means the end of the world
For some, the solar eclipse means the end of the world as we know it. According to BBC, various evangelist groups have already heralded the eclipse as a sign of an apocalypse.
A solar eclipse near your birthday
It is a common belief among astrologers that a solar eclipse six months leading up to or on your birthday is a sign of bad health. Since six months equals half of the year, that would mean about half of the population would be affected by this myth.

According to tradition, It's a common practice among people to bang pots and pans and make loud noises during an eclipse to make the eclipse go away.
Attempting to conceive during the eclipse
Some believe if you are able to conceive during an eclipse, than your baby will be born with super powers. Look out Batman!
