TUCSON (AP) - The state is delaying release of an audit of the Tucson Unified School District's Mexican-American Studies program.

The Arizona Department of Education notified the district that it doesn't expect to make a decision on the investigative report before mid-May. The release had been due on Monday.

Former Arizona schools chief and current Attorney General Tom Horne is a vocal opponent of the program and found it violated a new state law before taking his current post. Horne says it promotes racial resentment toward whites while segregating students by race.

Current Arizona Schools Chief John Huppenthal then ordered the audit to determine if the ethnic studies program is illegal.  The district contends the program is legal.
