Bring Your Own Bag Celebrates the 20th Annual Earth Day Festival
BRING YOUR OWN BAG TUCSON, BYOBag Tucson, a non- profit entity within 501 (c) 3 Tucson Audubon Society, celebrates the 20th Annual Earth Day Festival at Reid Park, Saturday, April 12, 9am-2pm. This year, in honor of Tucson’s local Earth Day Celebration, Saturday’s attendees will have the opportunity to visit the BYOBag Tucson booth and to sign their pledged support in exchange for a free reusable bag. Pledges will be entered into a raffle to win $25 gift cards from local grocery stores. BYOBag Tucson encourages the use of reusable shopping bags, decreasing the use of disposable plastic bags, and increasing the recycling of plastic bags at local retail stores. Tucson’s Environmental Services reports that 4th Quarter, 2013, the number of single use plastic bags given out in Tucson totaled 20,463,713 bags; 3,432,000 bags were collected for recycling. BYOBag Tucson is an on-going community effort to encourage Tucsonans to increase the use of reusable shopping bags, decrease the use of disposable plastic bags, and increase the recycling of plastic bags at local retail stores. BYOBag Tucson encourages all citizens, young and old alike, to “Make It a Habit…and Grab It,” a reminder to bring their re-useable bags for shopping. Historically speaking, March 19, 2013 Mayor and Council approved new provisions for the City’s Plastic Bag Ordinance. Stores are now required to report quarterly to the Environmental Services Director.
