“Noche de Ciencias” - Family Science Nights
The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) is a non-profit organization that has the vision to enhance and achieve the potential of Hispanics in engineering, math and science. The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) – Southern Arizona Professional Chapter will celebrate its second “Noche de Ciencias” – Family Science Nights – on February 15, 2012. The first “Noche de Ciencias” took place last November at the Van Buskirk Elementary on which over 100 students and professionals attended. “Noche de Ciencias” is a national initiative to have a week of impact during Hispanic Heritage Month, and the month of February, to engage the Hispanic community in relaxed environments to have fun with science and engineering and promote college awareness in a bilingual setting. The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, student and professional chapters, across the United States and Puerto Rico engage their local communities with activities for K-12 students and provide informative bilingual workshops for their parents. The goal of “Noche De Ciencias” is to broaden the participation of Hispanics along all segments of the science and engineering pathway. The event will take place on February 15, 2012 from 5:30pm to 8pm at the John B. Wright Elementary, 4311 E. Linden St. During the event the parents will participate in several workshops that include: Overview of engineering, Distinguishing between types of engineering, College financial aid and admissions, Showcasing engineering in everyday life and Steps towards graduating successfully. At the same time the kids will participate on an interactive engineering project. The event will be free of cost to the students and parents.
