Cienega High School Advanced Drama presents "The Elephant Man," a play written in 1977 by Bernard Pomerance. Based on a true story, John Merrick is a hideously deformed nineteenth-century man who is rescued from life as a circus freak by a young surgeon, Dr. Treves, and under whose care and shelter reveals an acute intelligence and romantic imagination, subsequently becoming the object of compassionate attention from the elite of Victorian sociaty. But Merrick's belief that he can become a man like any other is a dream never to be realized.
