Latest talks change AZ ski resort's water source

Associated Press - March 9, 2010 6:54 PM ET

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - A new proposal for producing man-made snow at an Arizona ski resort would use water from a city aquifer instead of reclaimed wastewater.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has been withholding snowmaking permits for the Arizona Snowbowl as a way to promote settlement talks in a long-running dispute between American Indian tribes and the resort's owners.

The USDA proposes that the city of Flagstaff allow reclaimed wastewater to percolate into the ground and be pumped for the ski resort's use, instead of shipping the wastewater to the resort. The USDA says it will help to offset the cost.

Arizona's U.S. senators called the proposal inappropriate and a waste of taxpayer money.

The Arizona Daily Sun in Flagstaff first reported the development on Tuesday.
