REDONDO BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Detectives are investigating whether an abandoned newborn was alive when her mother allegedly dumped her in a trash bin and headed back to a party in Redondo Beach.
Jessica Canfield was booked Wednesday on suspicion of murder after her daughter was found dead, just blocks from a fire station where unwanted babies can be surrendered.
Police say Canfield was attending the party over the weekend when she went into labor and dumped the baby in the bin.
To protect unwanted babies, California implemented a law in 2001 to allow parents to give up their babies without fear of prosecution.
Department of Social Services spokesman Oscar Ramirez says at least 331 babies have been surrendered to authorities since the law was implemented. Another 151 babies have been found abandoned.
