Flagstaff manager looking at job cuts

Associated Press - February 4, 2010 2:44 PM ET

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - Flagstaff's city manager is looking at severe cuts in fire department personnel and even closing at least one fire station.

The city faces a budget shortfall estimated at $3.3 million.

Last year, the fire department escaped layoffs by relying heavily on cuts in its capital budget. With those funds exhausted, the Council is again being asked to consider cuts in the fire department.

One scenario offered by City Manager Kevin Burke would lay off a total of 20 in the fire department out of the equivalent of 99 full-time employees, close a fire station on East Butler Avenue and reduce the staff at another station.

The city council is meeting publicly Thursday and Friday to discuss the budget.
