Chandler brewery owner gives up dispute with ASU

Associated Press - February 3, 2010 6:04 AM ET

PHOENIX (AP) - The owner of a Chandler brewing company says he has changed the name of his popular beverage rather than fight Arizona State University in a mascot trademark infringement dispute.

In October, SanTan Brewery got a strongly worded "cease and desist" letter from an attorney representing ASU over the company's Sun Devil Ale.

ASU has historically allowed businesses to use the mascot's name and image on a selective basis, but it takes into consideration whether the firms' products and services would harm the university's image.

School officials say one category they never allow is alcoholic beverages because it sends the wrong message to their undergraduates who are mostly under 21 years old.

SanTan Brewing owner says the company's "light, citrusy hop-flavored" brew now will be called Devil's Ale.
