Shooting in Willcox leaves one in critical condition

WILLCOX, AZ - On Friday January 1, 2010 at approximately 3:50 am, the Cochise County Sheriff's Office was advised of a male subject who had been shot in the 5000 block of Heather Drive outside of Willcox Arizona.  Deputies encountered an ambulance at approximate mile post 12.5 on Fort Grant Road while enroute to the scene.  Medical personnel were treating a Hispanic male subject who was originally being transported by a personal vehicle to the hospital before making contact with the medics.

Sheriff's Deputies were able to determine that an altercation had taken place at the Heather Drive address before the 29 year old male subject was shot with an unknown caliber handgun.  The victim was shot at least one time in the head area according the medical personnel on scene.  The victim was taken by ambulance a short distance further on Fort Grant Road before being transferred to an air ambulance and subsequently being transported to a Tucson hospital for treatment.

Sheriff's Deputies and Detectives then continued to the Heather Drive location to gather additional information and evidence. The scene was on a two acre fenced lot with a single wide mobile home on the west half and a double wide trailer on the east half. Several subjects who reside in the double wide trailer were taken to the Sheriff's Office in Willcox to complete interviews. Upon completion of the interviews one female subject, 44 year old Josephina Zuniga Mendoza, was arrested and booked into the Cochise County Jail on charges of Hindering Prosecution, and Attempted Murder where she remains held without bond. 

The male victim remains in serious condition in the Tucson Hospital.  There is no additional information available for release at this time and the investigation is being continued by Sheriff's Office Detectives with additional arrests pending.
